The Regions and Cities of the Maritime Provinces
Summerside is the most important town in the western part of "the Island". Picturesquely located on Bedeque Bay it is a smaller edition of Charlottetown with a more compact business section and without the public buildings that mark the provincial capital. The harbour was once important as an export shipping port but is now used chiefly by fishing craft. Bedeque Bay is important for its oyster fishery. On the outskirts of Summerside is located the Dominion Government Experimental Fox Ranch where problems of the fur-breeding industry are investigated.
Port Borden, eighteen miles south of Summerside, is the point from which the C.N.R. ferry ships depart for Cape Tormentine, N.B. Here, since 1917, Prince Edward Island's newest town has developed, almost entirely in the service of transportation.
